The nitty gritty…

  • Update December 2023, though my garments have been really successful in hindsight have realised I have not left enough of a profit margin to allow me to produce these garments. After speaking with my printer they have shown me other people selling garments similar in quality but with simply a logo print for between £10-£25 more per jumper and also charging for shipping not shouldering the cost as I am. So I will need to reevaluate my pricing in 2024 to make sure it is not only sustainable for the planet but also helps keep me in business.

A Finisterre hoody might cost you £135, a stack it high, sell it low retailer like Primark might sell theirs for £20 (this is much less than my costs). I am passionate about only producing excellent quality garments designed to be worn and loved from organic and recycled materials. Printing from inks made from water from natural sources, less than a mile from my house. Slow, small batch. I will never produce anything designed to be worn for one season. Hard-wearing, minimalist pieces designed to last, I’m not looking to create superfluous needs, respecting people and nature. I’ve designed my very first collections from eco-friendly, organic and recycled fabrics to limit pollution and the production of virgin textiles. All pieces from this collection are made to order to eliminate waste and overproduction.

    My costs come from:

    - Using garments made with responsible fashion at its core

    - High quality garments made to last

    - Ordering small amounts means a higher cost per unit and I will never compete with fast fashion retailers

    - Printing to order using a local Cornish printing company

    - High quality printing techniques, not a heat transfer in sight

    - Time to design and illustrate with love and care, these designs are months of hard work and dedication

    - The design process, I’ve spent hundreds on samples from various companies, garment manufacturers, printers, POD suppliers etc. I don’t ever expect to make this money back but it part of the costs of bringing this collection to life

    - Love, care and strict quality control

    - Listing and transaction fees (average 25-30% in total), corporation tax (19%) and other boring things that cost a small fortune but go back in to funding the UK economy.

With this in mind I have priced the items to be in line, or less expensive than, comparable quality items and to allow me to make a VERY modest profit which will go back in to my company to allow me to create future collections. I understand that these garments are not accessible to everyone and might be the cost of three fast fashion garments, I am not putting profits over people, my brand has always been about you, my wonderful wild woman. My commitment to my ethics and integrity dictates my pricing structure.

  • Printed small batch (4 at a time) by a small family business in the North of England and designed by a wild woman in the South West (that’s me), using responsibly sourced birch wood ply.

These mermaids are first placed in to a custom made jig, UV printed with white ink, then overprinted in colour and laser cut to shape by Emma. They then come to me where I add a ribbon, print the packaging using 100% recycled card stock, seal in an eco cello before finally packing her in own mailing box to be sent to you.

Each step of the process is filled with love and care.

When I had these sampled Emma sent me a voice note telling me that they take too long for her to charge me the proper rate but she loved them so much she wanted to help bring my vision to reality. We both agreed to under charge for our time and resources in order to release these Mermaid Mother Christmas Tree Toppers. Thank you so much, Emma!

None of my time spent illustrating and creating this piece has been charged for. There is a small ‘profit’ worked in to my costs, but it’s not really a profit, it is to buy me time, time to create more. Create things that speak to people, that make their heart sing, bring joy.
